Five Books on the Prayer Book, Read Straight Through
The Library
Five Books, One Shelf
The long-form works of this site, gathered. Each is a complete book, set to be
read continuously rather than consulted — one paper, one type, one measure, so
that passing from one to another is like turning a page rather than opening a
different volume.
The reference tools — the concordances, the searchable Prayer Book, the
hymnal and missal indexes — remain under BCP Reference,
where they are looked things up in rather than read.

- 📚The American Prayer Book — Edward Lambe Parsons & Bayard Hale Jones, 1937. Its origins and principles, in nineteen chapters: the ancestry of the book, the forming and fixing of the American rite, the Communion offices set side by side, the Litany, the Daily Offices, and the Prayer Book as it stands today.
- 📖The Lay Folks' History of the Liturgy — the whole history in chapters, from the primitive religions and the Jewish inheritance through the Norman period and the Reformation to the making of the Ordinal, written for the layman rather than the specialist.
- 🕮Dynamic Redemption — Bayard Hale Jones, 1961. Eight reflections on the Book of Common Prayer, delivered as Advent lectures at St. Philip's Cathedral, Atlanta, in 1949 for the four hundredth anniversary of the first Prayer Book, and published posthumously by The Seabury Press.
- 🔖Pepper's Analytical Index — George Wharton Pepper, 1948. An index to the Prayer Book of nearly fifteen hundred entries, with its explanatory introduction, an account of how the Index evolved, the psalter changes of 1928, and the Gladstone concordance beside it.
- ✠The Sarum Missal in English — Frederick E. Warren, 1911. A partial, proofed digital reading edition of the Ordinary and Canon in Part I (printed pp. 20–62) and the Common of Saints in Part II (printed pp. 1–54), with Warren's page references left in view. This is not the complete two-volume Missal; its later votive masses and other material remain outside this BCP-oriented pilot.
