This digital edition reproduces the complete text of George Wharton Pepper’s An Analytical Index to The Book of Common Prayer (Philadelphia: J. C. Winston Company, 1948). The work entered the United States public domain on 1 January 1977 by reason of non-renewal under the 1909 Copyright Act.

The copyright was eligible for renewal in 1976 (the 28th year of the original term). A search of the Catalog of Copyright Entries renewal records for 1975–1977, keyed against the Stanford Copyright Renewal Database and the New York Public Library’s machine-readable transcription, returns no matching renewal under any variant of the author’s name, the work’s title, or the publisher as claimant. Pepper’s literary executor, Fidelity Bank, did renew his autobiography Philadelphia Lawyer on 1 November 1972 (R538822); the estate was therefore competent in matters of copyright maintenance and either declined to renew the present work or allowed the term to lapse. Either way, the legal effect is the same: at the close of the 28th year the copyright terminated, and no subsequent legislation has restored it.

The text is therefore reproduced here in full and without restriction for use within the United States. (Under United Kingdom and European Union law—life of the author plus seventy years—the work remains in copyright until 1 January 2032, the author having died on 24 May 1961.) This is a statement of evidentiary findings, not legal advice.
