Revision

George Wharton Pepper, An Analytical Index to the Book of Common Prayer and a Brief Account of its Evolution; together with a Revision of Gladstone's Concordance to the Psalter (Philadelphia: J.C. Winston Co., 1948), pp. 142–end. Pepper revised Gladstone's concordance against the 1928 American Psalter, with the family's blessing, completing Gladstone's work for a new generation and a revised text. References are Psalm.Verse, per the Psalter as printed in the 1928 BCP. Italic bis, ter, quater indicate two, three, or four occurrences of the word in the same verse.

Editorial method

Pepper's volume is in the public domain in the United States (no renewal filed in 1975–76). The Proper Names section (Part I) has been hand-transcribed from the scanned pages and is searchable as text. The Ordinary Words section (Part II) is presented as scanned page-images of the printed columns: OCR of dense small-cap type proved too unreliable for a faithful digital edition, and the photographic facsimile preserves Pepper's typography exactly. Each spread can be viewed inline, downloaded as a single-page PDF, or printed. The complete 110-page scan is also available as one PDF.

Coverage

This edition covers pp. 142–251 — Part I (Proper Names, complete) and Part II (Ordinary Words, complete from Above through Zeal), reproducing the entire Gladstone Concordance as Pepper revised it.

Including God (in the Proper Sense), Lord (Ditto), Jehovah, and Jah, whether printed as LORD or Lord.

Omitting the article, auxiliary verbs, prepositions, interjections, and the like. Fifty-five spreads cover words from Above through Zeal. Use the navigation below to step through the pages, or jump to a letter.
