Drawn from George Wharton Pepper

as revised by Pepper (1948)

A Note on the Use of this Index
The 1928 Book of Common Prayer contains far more prayers than those which appear in the Sunday Eucharist or the Daily Office. Distributed across the Visitation of the Sick, the Burial of the Dead, the Churching of Women, the Solemnization of Matrimony, the Ordinal, the Family Prayers, the Additional Prayers, and the various Occasional Services, there are scores of prayers of great beauty and pastoral precision which a priest who relies only on the standard Collects will never use.
George Wharton Pepper identified this problem and addressed it in his Analytical Index to the Book of Common Prayer (1948). His Prayers section at pages 78–105 lists every prayer in the 1928 BCP, organised first by service and then by opening word. The present index reorganises Pepper's material by pastoral category, so that a priest preparing Evening Prayer, intercessions, or a service for a particular occasion can find in a moment which prayers from the whole breadth of the BCP are available.
To each pastoral category are added the relevant Psalms from W. E. Gladstone's Psalter with a Concordance (John Murray, London, 1895), as revised by Pepper in his 1948 edition. Gladstone's thematic title for each Psalm — The Cry of the Penitent, The Good Shepherd, Dwelling Under the Defence of the Most High — identifies the Psalm's dominant devotional character and makes it immediately usable as a companion to the prayers of its category. A priest leading Evening Prayer via Zoom who wishes to vary both the intercessions and the psalmody from week to week has in this document a complete resource for doing so.
For each prayer the index provides: the subject or occasion; the opening words by which the prayer may be identified in any edition of the 1928 BCP; the service or section of the BCP in which it occurs; and the page number in the Winston edition. The opening words are the surest guide, since pagination varies between editions.
